Tracy Poulsen, a teacher from Spanish Fork High School, broke some new ground and published a chemistry book specific for her class. The book is titled "Introductory Chemistry". She used the organization CK-12 which produces textbooks that are more adaptable, usable and cost effective. In writing her new book, she used "creative commons" as a resource along with what she wrote. There are a lot of advantages with this book, such as: students receive their own book that they can write in, take notes in, and also keep when the course is over.

On Friday September 10th, Senior Council hosted their Senior Sunrise on their home football field. Seniors gathered around and ate muffins, and sipped hot chocolate while socializing and waiting for the sunrise. Students were arriving at 6:30 a.m. sharp. The sun came up at about 7:30, and seniors squeezed together for a group picture. It was fun and filled with smiles, showing off our Don Pride and continuing our Spanish Fork tradition. It was an awesome and amazing experience.

The SFHS Hope Squad is a group of students that were selected by their peers as students that were good listeners and trustworthy. They are organized to help and listen to other students who need someone to lean on. On September 7 and 10, Hope Squad members went to the Spanish Fork and Diamond Fork Junior Highs and taught the 8th grade health students important life lessons on self-esteem issues. The students participated in activities and games that helped them elarn how to build their own self-esteem as well as their peers.

Spanish Fork had the re-opening of North Park on August 28th. The new park has been completely re-modeled, and has much more to offer! There is less grass space than before, and more play ground area and water activities. The park is a great place for families to come for picnics, or to walk on the trail, or even to play on the playground. The water area is complete with shooting fountains that little children love to play in! The actual playground itself is much more modern, with a rock wall to climb, teeter-totters, a spider-web jungle gym, and much, much more!

This last Tuesday, September 7, the NHS officers held a meeting at Spanish Fork High School planning up some of the best service projects yet. With the help of a new plan of funding for these service projects, which involves students handing out fliers around town to leave porch lights on during a certain evening if citizens would like to donate, students plan to bring in more donations than ever into the service funds of NHS.

Born and raised in American Fork, Ellen Magleby is Spanish Fork High School’s new Guitar, Orchestra, Band and Marching Band teacher. Recently graduated from BYU in 2010, Ms. Magleby has a bachelor’s degree in music. She has performed in Europe and the Middle East, attending a music school in Austria and played in the Vietnamese Opera and Ballet Orchestra. She plays just about every instrument and is most proficient with the Saxophone which she has been playing for 12 years and has been involved with music for 15 years. Having a good season this year by winning a majority of our matches is a goal for SFHS team. So far this year, the goal is being met. The match against Uintah was Varsity won 5-0 and Junior Varsity was 8-0. The tennis team also went to St. George for a tournament. The Junior Varsity and Varsity competed separately. They played several matches, and everyone played at least 2 matches each in two days. The team ended up doing great. Overall, Varsity won 3rd place as a school and Junior Varsity took 2nd as a school.

There are all sorts of clubs to participate in at Spanish Fork High School this year, and Club Rush is just about to begin! Starting up in these next few weeks, the clubs are going to be some of the best yet! Bringing back the originals clubs such as, DECA, FBLA, FFA, FCLA, Hope Squad, and ping-pong club we are also going to have all sorts of new ones. The students of Spanish fork are hosting some of the best clubs yet so come and join the fun and participate in some of the programs that make this school shine!

SFHS Student Council is saving the planet with one used cell phone at a time, well, not just cell phones. The Council has created a fundraiser that will collect any old electronic device that you may no longer need. They can be working or broken. Items range from old cell phones, game boys, and empty ink jet cartridges to laptop computers and E-books. The old, worn out devices will be traded in for cash to help raise money for the Student Council costs as well as various activities for the students of SFHS such as the Senior Sunrise and Homecoming Week.
