On the day of October 18th, Spanish Fork's very own, talented Elliot Naulu placed 2nd in the 4A state golf tournament. The tournament took place at Sunbrook Golf course in St George. Elliot was asked to recount his experience at state and how he felt about the tournament. On the first day, he shot a 75 and the leader was only three strokes ahead with a 72. On the second day, he was 3 under going onto hole 16. Coach Rogers looked at the scores and said Elliot needed to birdie those next three holes to beat the leader. Elliot got up to the green and ended up with a par. That was fine; he could still birdie these next two holes and tie the leader and have a shoot out. On hole 17, Elliot had an incredible journey getting on the green, then he sank a 15 foot putt for the birdie. Things were looking good. All he had to do was birdie this last hole and it would be a tied match. Stepping onto the tee box, he pulled out what he was sure was the right club on the par 3. Elliot hit right onto the green, and the ball took an interesting spin and rolled right into the rough. He knew that he had to chip that one in to tie it. Well, he chipped it, and it hit the flag and popped out of the hole 3 inches. He sank the putt causing him to take second, losing first place by only one stroke. It was a tough break, but SFHS is expecting big things from Elliot next season as he plays his senior year. When Coach Rogers was asked about Elliot, this is what he had to say, "Elliot is a clutch player, and this was the most fun I've ever had watching golf. He played incredible for the amount of pressure he was under. I was amazed how he knew what he needed to do with two holes left. He birdied 17 and narrowly missed 18. He's an awesome athlete, and I'm glad I got to coach him." Congratulations Elliot and way to make Spanish Fork proud.
