On May 5th, the Band at Spanish Fork High School celebrated a year of fun and memories. The night was kicked off by live entertainment as the “Rock Solid” Jazz Band played while band members and their families arrived to the cafeteria decorated to resemble a luau. After a welcome by Mr. McKee¸ dinner was served, donated by Outback Steakhouse and Fresh Market. During dinner, guests were treated to a slideshow highlighting the band during the 2009-2010 school year. One of the exciting purposes is to highlight accomplishments and successes of the band throughout the year. Jeremy Boren, Tyler Jolly, Brandon Whitney, and Taylor Allred were awarded the Distinguished Senior Award, which is given to seniors who participated in the band programs at SFHS since freshmen year. David Andrews was awarded the Louis Armstrong Award for Jazz Band and Tyler Jolly was awarded the John Philips Sousa award for Concert Band. Those who lettered in the past year were also announced and recognized. Finally, the moment continuing band members were waiting for arrived- Band Director Mr. Smith announced the Band Leadership for the 2010-2011 school year. President: Melinda Lundgreen, Vice President: David Andrews, Vice President: Joshua French, and Secretary: Kyle Lowe. And as Marching Band members waited anxiously, Drum Major was announced to be Katie Stanworth, a senior next year. At last, the banquet wrapped up with the annual “story time”, where Mr. Smith read Dr. Suess’ “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” This reading was especially special to all as Mr. Smith will be leaving SFHS at the end of the year to pursue his doctorate at Northern Colorado University. There was many a moist eye as Mr. Smith gave his yearly council to his students, effectively wrapping up the 2010 school year. The Band will be performing for their final concert on May 20th at the SFHS Auditorium and will be playing at the 2010 graduation.
