UCBT Sewing Project Teaches Skills for Life

The Utah Community Based Transition (UCBT) students at Spanish Fork High School were able to learn more about sewing in their class. All the students brought their own material to make a variety of things, including pillow cases, crayon holders, quilts, purses, and skirts. Kay Thomas-Perkins, the UCBT coordinator at SFHS, thought this project was especially useful for the students. “If they can learn to operate a sewing machine, they can mend a pair of pants in the future. It teaches them skills for later in life and helps them to be more independent.” This was a good opportunity for the UCBT students to gain skills for the future and to have fun. According to Thomas-Perkins, UCBT stands for You Can’t Beat Them. And the sewing skills the students acquired prove her statement is accurate.
