Alyssa Larsen, teacher of the Spanish Fork High School special education program and coach of the girl’s basketball team was recently recognized recently as the “Teacher of The Year” personally by philanthropist Karen Huntsman through her Huntsman Awards for Excellence in Education program.

Dusty Averett, Alyssa’s instructional aide headed up the nomination process in which she got multiple letters of recommendation from peers, students, basketball players and parents of students stating why she deserves to be the Huntsman Teacher of The Year. Alyssa was one of only eleven teachers selected from hundreds of applicants to receive this amazing award in which she will attend a dinner at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake where she will be awarded with a $10,000 cash prize.

The Huntsman program’s purpose is “to recognize, inspire and reward the best teachers, school administrators, and volunteers in Utah for continually seeking ways to improve the quality of education in our public school system.” Our teacher and friend Alyssa Larsen stands for every aspect of the mission statement and has helped unite our community through small and simple means.
