Utah State FFA Convention was held at Utah State University in Logan, Utah, and this year’s convention didn’t disappoint; especially for Spanish Fork. Students from Spanish Fork High School not only had fun mingling with students from all over the state, but many also competed in various competitions, learned from state and national officers including our very own state president Chaleesa Warren, and in the end represented Spanish Fork by winning well deserved awards including State Star Farmer; perhaps the biggest award an individual can win at the state level. Spanish Fork kicked off the convention by competing very well in the Parliamentary Procedures contest. Members of the team included Kira Fenn, Cheyenne Jensen, Kricket Keetch, Jessica Swenson, Kayden Worthington, Tyler Galt, and Mikkel Olsen. Unfortunately, they did not place in the top three, but shortly after the competition, Spanish Fork’s advisor Kasee Smith had this to say about her team, “We made a few minor mistakes, but they should be proud. They legitimately could’ve and probably would have won this competition many other years. It was very close, and they’re an outstanding team” As the convention proceeded, students were privileged to hear the retiring addresses of the State officers as well as celebrating the hard work of members and chapters across the state as they received awards for their outstanding projects and hard work. Spanish Fork FFA is currently the largest chapter in the state, and they proved that they’re not only large in terms of sheer numbers, but they also work hard and accomplish a great deal every year. Once again, the entire chapter was given the Five Star Chapter Award. Tyler Galt, this year’s chapter president also received an award. He is this years Star State Farmer, and was ecstatic to pick up his award. Chaleesa Warren, the 2010-2011 State President and former student at Spanish Fork High School was the final officer to give a retiring address this year. She spoke in the last session about making a difference in the lives of other members, friends, or even strangers. Her retiring address was entitled “The Butterfly Effect” and was one of the most compelling speeches of any retiring officer in recent years. Most FFA members realize how awesome the Spanish Fork FFA Chapter is, but to those of you who aren’t as involved, the accomplishments at this year’s convention are proof enough of the caliber of organization that exists in Spanish Fork. The quality of this chapter is second to none and the officers and advisors here in Spanish Fork deserve a huge pat on the back. FFA gives opportunities for students to learn and grow whether they are involved in agriculture or not. Jessica Swenson, a senior officer at Spanish Fork said, “FFA has given me the chance to make awesome friends, learn and explore career opportunities, and become a leader amongst my peers.” And Kira Fenn added, “I challenge everybody to step out of their comfort zone and get involved in FFA. I promise you won’t regret it!”
