Hard work and long hours of practice paid off this week for Spanish Fork FFA as they competed at Area contest where they competed in parliamentary Procedure, Proficiency Awards, and Star Awards. In order to compete at the State level in speaking contests, proficiency awards and star awards, students must first take 1st place at area contest. If these students win at state level then they will be representing the state at Nationals, and will be up against the top teams and projects from across the nation.

Parliamentary Procedure is a team contest, which consists of six people that are given a main motion to debate. It is one of the most complex and competitive contests in FFA. Spanish Fork’s team consisted of Jackson Stewart the chairman, Mitchell Frost the Secretary and then the four floor members, Riley McKenzie, Bailee Argyle, Lindsey Olsen, and Brooke Voorhees. The Secretary and the floor members have to make two, motions one that is required and one of their choosing, as well as debating four times, in ten minutes. The Spanish Fork team competed against two other chapters and won. They will compete at State Convention this March.

Many of the students received proficiency awards from their work in their SAEs (Supervised Agriculture Experience). Mitchell Frost received first in Ag Processing and Poultry Production. Cooper Galt received an first for his Swine Entrepreneurship. Kaitlin Hallam received first in Agriculture Fabrication and Mechanics, Diversified Livestock and Animal Systems. All of these students have worked hard, and have passion for what they are doing and the chapter is really proud of them.

Another area that the students could compete in was with star awards. These are the most prestigious awards students can receive. Cooper Galt won Area Star Farmer. Kaitlin Hallam won Area Star in Agriscience and Mitchell Frost won Area Star in Placement. Brooke Voorhees will also compete at a state level in Star Greenhand in Agriculture science and Bailee Argyle will go on to compete for Star Greenhand in Production.

The State Degree is awarded to members who have shown commitment to their SAEs and to participating in leadership activities during their time in FFA. There are nine members who will receive their State FFA Degrees in March: Cooper Galt, Dalton Sorensen, Riley McKenzie, Mitchell Frost, Katie Thomas, Taylor Tomadakis, Ryleigh Olsen, Kaitlin Hallam and Kassie Christensen.

Finally the chapter also had five American Degree recipients. This is the highest degree that you can earn in the FFA and only .5% of all FFA members ever earn this award. This year Wyatt O’ Brien, Wyatt Peay, Brilee Palambo, Kamrey Olsen and Corbin Redd will receive their American Degree.
