Spanish Fork FFA competed at Area 5 Contests January 30. These contests are the qualifiers for some of the State competitions and students competed against eight other schools.

Katelyn Beckstead and Ellie Ash of SFJHS competed in the creed contest. This contest has students memorize a five paragraph creed and recite it to the judges. They also answer questions on their thoughts and feelings of the creed. Katelyn and Ellie both did a great job representing our chapter. Chase Holt competed in the Prepared Public Speaking event and was third place. He wrote a speech on Genetically Modified Organisms and presented it to the judges. He answered questions that the judges had. Chase represented our chapter well and helped to inform people about a hot topic in agriculture right now. Five students were competed in and were the winners in their proficiency areas. The proficiency award recognizes students for their achievements with projects their Supervised Agricultural Experiences or projects done outside of class time.
  • Jake Jones - Wildlife Management: Jake traps nuisance animals to help better the environment or keep other animals safe. He sells the pelts at the local fur auction as part of his business J and J Trapping. He also raises ring-neck pheasants and sells or releases them.
  • Kacie Jones - Vegetable Production: Kacie has a large garden at her home where she has been able to gather over 750 pounds of produce. This produce is used at home or given to family and friends. Kacie has also become the Farmer's Market Manager for the school garden.
  • Lindsey Olsen - Sheep Production: Lindsey raises and exhibits lambs each year at five different shows across Utah. In addition she has her own small flock of thirteen ewes that she breeds for show lambs.
  • Tell Orton - Agricultural Services: Tell owns his own business of Circle T Skullworks. He uses dermestid beetles to clean skulls. He then whitens them. This is done for taxidermy purposes.
  • Brooke Voorhees - Food Science: Brooke works at Circle V Meat and is in charge of reading cooler temperatures. She tracks and ensures that the meat storage areas are safe.
In addition Tell Orton will be representing our area as a Star State in Agribusiness Finalist. Congratulations to all those who participated and good luck to those moving on to the state competition.
